New Jersey’s Steve Savona Reimagines an Arlo Guthrie Counterculture Anthem Giving “Coming Into Los Angeles” a Modern and Lived in Indie Rock Pulse.

Steve Savona’s bio, “I make music, you should too,” speaks to an artist focused on connection and the simple act of creation. As a veteran indie songwriter from New Jersey, his work makes a case that rock hasn’t disappeared, it has just matured. His sound blends the frankness of classic rock with the earnestness of contemporary songwriting.

You can hear this approach in his cover of Arlo Guthrie’s “Coming Into Los Angeles.” There’s a certain grit and grace to what Savona has created here. The track feels lived in, carrying echoes of smoky bar stages and late night reflections. His sound pursues a melodic authenticity instead of chasing trends. Guitars hum with nostalgia and his vocals carry the weight of experience, delivering lyrics with the same simplicity and truth as the original.

Guthrie’s original, released in 1969, perfectly captured the rebellious and free spirited feeling of its era. More than fifty years later, Savona’s version revives it. He injects the song with a fresh, rootsy energy and a modern indie rock pulse, all while staying true to its legacy.

On this version, Savona is joined by Lou Tambone on drums. It’s a warm, soulful tribute to rock’s golden age, defined by Savona’s raw vocals and earthy guitar tone. The rhythm section provides a laid back swagger. The groove itself has an effortless cool that feels both nostalgic and new.

A new lyric video from Zen Graphics accompanies the track. It effectively captures the open road imagery and freewheeling spirit of Guthrie’s version, channeling it through the perspective of a modern troubadour who brings his own grit and experience to the story.

Savona seems less interested in reinventing the song than in reconnecting with it. He translates its essence into something that feels familiar and new at the same time. This is the sound of a musician who believes in melodic magic, the power of simplicity, and the sheer joy of making good music.

Steve Savona’s version of “Coming Into Los Angeles,” featuring Lou Tambone, is available now on all major streaming platforms. It’s a compelling listen for fans of classic rock, Americana, and sincere indie music.
