With a dynamic career marked by exploration and evolution, L12 emerges from the humble beginnings of his hometown in Michigan. His journey has been one of constant growth and discovery, and in a hip-hop era where authenticity has often been elusive, L12 dares to be different. He does not make music for the sake of it; his style takes deep inspiration from real-life as much as from his musical luminaries. He always aspires to create music that not only entertains but also inspires others, touches hearts, and influences lives for the better. His budding career thus far is a testament to the power of hip-hop, rap, and R&B in telling relatable stories. With palpable versatility, L12 pushes the boundaries of hip-hop and rap while maintaining a consistent identity and honoring the very core foundations on which this timeless sound was built.
L12 returns with a 19-track album titled “Black Sheep Volume II” that is garnering positive acclaim from the vast hip-hop community due to its originality and how L12 shapes conversations around his own life experiences and growth, giving a listener a very VIP-like experience into his life.
The intro “B S V II” very much confirms L12’s ‘goated’ status with the sampled goat voices in the background as the artist prepares us for a lyrical odyssey that he produced, wrote, mixed, and mastered all by himself—another huge testament to his production virtuosity.
“I’m Convinced” is one of my personal favorites. The cadence for me is Joyner Lucas-like, but you can still feel the difference as L12 stamps his lyrical authority with some smart rhymes over this strong beat with dramatic thrill and flair. The energy is there, and on the mic, L12 lyrically confirms that he is suffering from success. The intricate bars and masterful delivery over a captivating hip-hop beat are why this track left such a lasting impression on me.
“Who Did It?” is yet another exquisite masterpiece with a smooth, mellow, yet expressive production. Its intimate intensity provides the ideal backdrop for L12 to do his things on the mic, hitting a listener right in the nostalgia with such underground rap finesse. Here, he expresses his thoughts in an intellectual manner, underscoring his lyrical prowess.
If you want to catch a vibe, then the jam “Champagne Lifestyle” is the one for you. L12 makes this track memorable with his haunting blend of catchy hooks and verses over an excellent beat, leaving a lasting impression on the heart and soul of the listener. Encapsulating the essence of luxury, celebration, and refined taste, this jam is very much like the experience of indulging in a glass of Champagne…trust me!
Another favorite of mine has to be “Tell Me How U Feel (Right Now)” if for nothing else but purely for how catchy and infectious the jam is. This is the kind of track that refuses to leave your mind, even after it is no more. I feel L12 struck gold with this; it’s a performance worthy of fanfare and one that not enough words can quantify. The beat is incredible, and the execution leaves nothing to be desired. On the mic, L12 is charismatic and tugs at a listener’s heartstrings with incredible finesse, leaving them wanting more and more.
Showcasing his versatile spirit, L12 taps into the allure of R&B with the track “It Is What It Is,” testing his vocal muscles to successful impact over a hauntingly beautiful soundscape that works to his advantage.
Well, there is so much more to enjoy from the entirety of “Black Sheep Volume II.” This is what the culture is feeling right now and has been delivered by an artist who prides himself on coming from the side of hip-hop/rap, where the quality of sound and lyrics all stand for something.
Take some time to stream this album and let the jams you dig the most find their way into your favorite playlist…is that too much to ask? No. I didn’t think so!
